School to Summit 2017
23/11/2017
Last Tuesday on the 14 of November all of the grade 6 left Mansfield Primary and rode out to Merrijig, the weather was really hot and dry there was a lot of steep hills.
We camped at Merrrijig Primary and had butter chicken for dinner and carrot cake for desert, we all went for a swim in the river. In the morning we had pancakes for breakfast we also had to pack up camp so we could leave before Merrijig Primary arrived at school. Group 4 left first then groups 3,2 and 1. We walked past the Merrijig pub and headed south towards Round Hill. After a few hours we stopped and had lunch once we arrived at Timber Top we had a tour of the school, it was quite big. Finally we were able to make camp at Darlings Huts. We had pizza for dinner and brownie for desert some people slept in the hut. In the morning we had cereal for breakfast before packing up and setting off toward Forest Creek Saddle. We had lunch in the rain, walked in the rain told riddles in the rain. When we got to camp we set up our tents in the rain, and had tortellini for dinner and chocolate chip biscuits. On the last day we backed up our wet tents, had breakfast and headed out to West Ridge we waited for an hour in a sheltered place for a storm to pass, when the storm had pased we kept walking it was very steep in some parts and then we finally reached the summit. The final 200 m was the most exhilarating and exhausting time of the camp, we were all proud of our selves and each other for making it to the summit of Mt Buller. by Toby Cotterill and Mahi Suggate Reaching the summit! 14/11/2017
On the 19th of October all of the grade 6 students headed off for a practice hike in preparation for our camp in November. It was good and bad, bad because it was pouring with rain and good because we will be more prepared and know what to bring next time. Before we set off we received our School to Summit t-shirts which were designed by Eadie Lindsay, one of our grade 6 girls. Once we had received our t-shirts we set off from school to the top of Rifle Butts Reserve. It took about 3 hours to get to the top and back. When we returned we had lunch and a small break. Our next activity was bike riding. We rode for about 1 hour on the bikes. The lesson was run by our sport teacher Ms Dreissen. A few people fell off while we were practising braking quickly. To wrap up the day we organised our tent groups and did a little activity with our camp groups. Our day was tiring but we are better prepared for our camp. Everybody had lots of fun. Our grade 5 and 6's have been busy planning, carving and now printing their lino cut designs. In Prep students have been improving their fine motor skills by learning how to sew basic stitches and create a wall hanging. These Prep students are enjoying sharing each others artworks during one of our regular "gallery walks". Grade 1/2 classes have been further developing their sewing skills by decorating Christmas themed wall hangings.
White Ribbon Day
16/10/2017
On Friday 13th of October was White Ribbon Day. White Ribbon Day is about protecting children from violence. The teachers raised awareness by writing on their hands saying who they were protecting. The welfare team handed out white ribbons to each class everyone got a ribbon with their name on it and they were tied to the front fence on Apollo Street. WIN PRIZES FOR YOUR SCHOOL!! Did you know that you can win prizes just for walking, riding or scooting to and from school? By participating in "VicHealth's Walk to School" this October, you could help your school win a regional school prize. Schools with the highest participation levels are eligible so every time a child walks, rides or scoots to and from school during October, they increase your school’s chance of winning! It’s a great way to help students learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, every day. It also encourages primary schools, local councils and communities to make active travel easy, safe and accessible. Along with the health benefits, walking to school has benefits for the whole community. It reduces traffic congestion, saves on parking, helps us connect with family and friends and even saves the environment! Last year, 758 primary schools across Victoria took part in Walk to School, with 144,928 primary kids recording more than 2.2 million walks, rides and scoots throughout October. To learn more, visit the Walk to School website. At 8:30 most of us see what we will be doing for the day. Then at 9:00am we start school and we begin the day by counting out the home reading books and question of the day. We begin at 9:15am with our workbooks and do language convention pages. Then 10:45am we have snack time till 11:00 and we go out and play in the sports hall and play for half an hour till 11:30. At 11:30 we come back and do mindful maths {smiling minds.} At 11:45 we start maths and if we finish we do card games or colour our pictures in the back of our books. At 12:45 we write our stories or finish off our last pieces. At 1:15 we go to our bags and get our lunchboxes out. At 1:30 we go out to the sports hall again and play till 2:00.
