Learning at MPS
At Mansfield Primary School our vision is to Inspire, Challenge and Support our students to Make a Difference in our world. Core subjects covered in the classroom are Literacy, Numeracy, Humanities, Science and Social/Emotional Development.
We support students to become life-long readers with sequential phonics lessons, explicitly taught comprehension strategies, scaffolding independent book choice and dedicated reading time. Our aim is to inspire our students as real-world writers. We explore a wide range of fiction and non-fiction writing genres, supported by rich mentor texts to help students discover and refine their own individual writer’s voice. Students have individual reading and writing goals that allow them to develop at an independent level in these core learning areas.
Numeracy sessions involve differentiated lessons, personal learning pathways and hands-on tasks that give all students the opportunity to develop core numeracy skills at an individual level. Students learn about place value, counting, operations, measurement, shape, data and statistics. Students that excel in numeracy continue their learning through an online extension program and the with opportunity to solve complex, applied numeracy problems in the Maths Olympiad competition.
In Discovery Learning sessions students learn about the world around them in units of work that cover humanities (history, geography, civics & citizenship, economics), culture, science, design, technology and health skills and understanding. Excursions, guest speakers, research projects, experiments and presentations form a big part of the experiences in these areas.
We challenge and support students at all year levels to listen actively and speak confidently within their class group, and provide opportunity for students to interact with the broader school community during recess, assembly, unit sport sessions, on camps, buddy days and during other whole school celebrations.

Social and Emotional learning at MPS
Students at MPS are supported to develop their social and emotional wellbeing through explicit, sequential lessons taught by classroom teachers. Our school uses the RRRR (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships) program as a basis for this learning. This learning is supplemented by our involvement with The Resilience Project. Our S2S, Buddy Program and Year 6 leadership teams are platforms that allow students to practice and build social and emotional capabilities.
Performing Arts
The Performing Arts Program at Mansfield Primary School teaches music, drama and dance to all year levels. Students have opportunities to play a wide range of percussion, string, keyboard and wind instruments. They also listen to, compose, critique and perform various types of music. The students put together solo, group, whole class and department musicals and fill all the roles from backstage, script writing and performers.

Visual Arts
The Visual Arts Room at Mansfield Primary School offer students a peaceful and inspiring place to be creative.
Art activities are designed to develop fine motor skills and build knowledge and skills about a wide variety of artworks and mediums, how they are created and used in our world. They are inspired by artist’s studies relating to their artwork. Students work individually and collaboratively; as a class or whole school, on art projects for themselves and others. Over the course of a year students explore, create and reflect on 2D Drawing, Collage, Painting, Printing Ceramics, Threads & Textiles and Construction. We are proud of our ‘From Scratch’ ceramics program. From Foundation class, skills are built on each year, culminating with Grade 6 students learning the art of throwing clay to make bowls and beakers on potters wheels in our Art room studio. |
STEM
Our dedicated STEM classes are a chance for students to take part in hands on learning experiences and investigations. They undertake scientific experiments and engineering challenges where they practice following a procedure, testing predictions and reflecting on their discoveries.

Physical Education
The Physical Education program at Mansfield Primary School focuses on the importance of participation, encouraging a healthy lifestyle, physical activity, sport education, team work, sportsmanship and fun.
It is designed to offer our students as many different sporting opportunities as possible and promotes a ‘give it a go’ attitude, no matter their strengths and weaknesses.
During Physical Education lessons, we aim to develop motor skills and movement competence, while looking at rules, structures of play and sportsmanship. Students also participate weekly in Unit Sport, playing in a variety of games and challenges within their class and house groups.
Sport has a positive effect on students’ social interaction and self-esteem and here at Mansfield Primary, we make sure all children are catered for and find a love of sport and being active.

School to Summit
The School to Summit Outdoor Education program at Mansfield Primary is unique and a key feature of our school. It is designed so that it builds from Prep to Grade 6, challenging each child, each year as students work towards the Grade 6 School to Summit camp. The program develops students’ knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural environment, while also building independence, confidence and self-esteem. Students are challenged both physically and mentally and learn the importance of safety, self-management, camp skills, tent set up, camp cooking, orienteering, map reading and much more.
